The original oil pastel, invented in Japan in 1925.

A true classic — all Japanese schoolchildren have had a box of Cray-Pas in their bookbag at one point. Softer than crayons, they are easy to layer, mix, and smudge. Less easy to break. Non-toxic and certified AP safe.

The name says it all: "Cray" for crayon, and "Pas" for the bright colors of pastels. Sakura invented the medium in 1925 with a simple goal: give children a blendable, colorful alternative to the black ink they spent hours on in school. The formula was refined by 1928 into something consistent in any season, and that formulation remains the basis for the Cray-Pas children and adults use today.

The yellow box with the dachshund and the rose has barely changed since. It doesn't need to.

Set of 24. Made in Japan. 🇯🇵
