Kousaido Incense in Paulownia Wood Box (Made in Kyoto)
Kousaido Incense in Paulownia Wood Box (Made in Kyoto)
Incense from Kousaido, a Kyoto incense house founded in 1994 around a single idea, that the city's centuries of history and shifting seasons could be distilled into scent. Each fragrance in this collection draws from a real corner of Kyoto, sandalwood at the base throughout, and arrives packed in a paulownia wood box built for safekeeping. Thirty sticks per box, each one burning for roughly fifteen to twenty minutes.
Morning Mist (Sagano Asagiri): sandalwood, oakmoss, and lily of the valley, capturing the soft hush of fog over the bamboo forest of Sagano
Gion Night (Gion no Hana): sandalwood, ylang-ylang, and amber, sweet and floral, recalling a Gion evening
Bamboo: fresh and woody, drawn from the cool stillness of a bamboo grove
Ancient Capital: a traditional sweet amber scent built to feel as old as Kyoto itself
Kyoto Dusk (Murasakino no Yugasumi): sandalwood, tuberose, and jasmine, soft and wistful, standing in for the purple haze that settles over Kyoto's fields at dusk
Lotus: lotus and bergamot, deep and meditative, evoking flowers adrift on a still garden pond
Magnolia: clean and a little austere, built around the quiet presence of the magnolia bloom
Calligraphy Ink: borneol giving it a sharp, inky top note true to its name
