Love Hotels Book by Kyoichi Tsuzuki
A 448-page tour through the wonderful weird world of the Japanese love hotel.
In the 2000s, photographer and editor Kyoichi Tsuzuki set out to document a disappearing piece of Japanese design culture: the wildly imaginative interiors of Japan’s love hotels. He photographed 73 rooms, capturing an era of themed beds, mirrored ceilings, glowing floors, and improbable color schemes.
Love Hotels collects those photographs alongside newer images showing how the hotels have changed in the 2020s. What starts as a book about places designed for private encounters becomes an incredible archive of Showa and Heisei-era vernacular design, and of a kind of playful, excessive interior architecture that has largely disappeared.
Tsuzuki is also the photographer behind Tokyo Style and Roadside Japan, and has spent decades documenting the overlooked, eccentric, and unglamorous corners of Japanese life.
